Grape: Malvasia, Tinta, Negra Mole
Tasting notes: Stone fruits, Toffee, Spice, Marmalade
Every public event—from the signing of the Declaration of Independence to George Washington’s Inauguration—was toasted with a glass of Madeira. In 1998 the Rare Wine company began working with Vinhos Barbeito’s owner, Ricardo Freitas, to create a series of Madeiras reflecting the style and complexity that enchanted our forefathers. To emphasize America’s deep historical connection to Madeira, each wine in the series is named for a U.S. city where Madeira was popular in the 18th and 19th centuries.
The sweetest and richest in the Historic series, the New York Malmsey is lush and expansive in the mouth, offering layers of sweet stone fruit, dried toffee, coffee, Chinese 5-spice, dates, espresso and orange marmalade flavors. Candied flowers, smoke and cedary accents show on the plush finish. This wine was filtered and does not require decanting. It was bottled ready for drinking and will keep well once opened. It is superb after dinner, with dessert or on its own.
