The Honig Family purchased their 68-acre vineyard in Rutherford in 1964, and sold the grapes they grew to neighboring wineries. Today, the Honig family are leaders in sustainability, both in the vineyard and the winery, and what began as a small “garage” winery has today become a successful family enterprise. Winemaker, Kristin Belair focuses on two varietals: Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon. This focus allows her to produce handcrafted wines that are a true expression of the vineyard. As a 15 year club member, I can attest to the year in and year out quality from this winery.
The 2016 Honig Cabernet Sauvignon is soft, fruity, balanced, and full bodied with round and juicy tnnins. The wine was aged 18 months in American and French oak, 35% new. On the smooth palate there are flavors of blackberry, red plum, and raspberry fruit with notes of cranberry, black tea, spice, leather, oak, vanilla, and coriander seed. The finish is long and toasty. It should pair well with a roasted pork loin roast.
