Kathryn Walt Hall, a former US ambassador to Austria, purchased the St. Helena estate in 2003, and ever since it has been a reliable source of excellent Bordeaux-inspired wines. Hall is California’s first LEED Gold Certified winery, and home to an impressive state-of-the-art winemaking facility, so each wine is made with the utmost care and skillful technique from start to finish. As a long time member of Hall's club, I can personally attest to their consistent quality year after year.
This classic, well-made wine is plush, dense, and beautifully textured. It's richly concentrated with fine grained tannin and good length. Fifty percent new French oak gives the 2017 a boost of complexity and structure. The palate is ripe and fleshy. Balanced flavors of dark chocolate, black and red fruits, currant, licorice, vanilla, and hints of dried thyme, oak and leather are abundant.
