Grape: Cabernet Sauvignon
Tasting Notes: Dark fruit, Vanilla, Blueberry, Cigar box
The history of Orin Swift Cellars dates back to 1995 when on a lark, David Swift Phinney took a friend up on an offer and went to Florence, Italy to spend a semester “studying”. During that time, he was introduced to wine, how it was made, and got hooked. He founded Orin Swift Cellars in 1998; Orin is his father’s middle name and Swift is his mother’s maiden name.
Mercury Head is the slang term for the authentic Liberty Dime which serves as the wine’s “front label”. As a child, Dave Phinney collected these unique dimes and it wasn’t until years later when he received one as change that he was reminded how striking they are. The 2018 Mercury Head Cabernet is another outstanding effort by Mr. Phinney. Unctuous, full bodied with young, mellow tannins and well structured. Dark fruit abounds but there's also a presence of cassis, plum preserves, vanilla, blueberry, cherry, and mulberries with hints of cigar box, dried bay leaves, pencil lead and truffles. It closes with a satiating finish that is long and textured.
Aged 18 months in French Oak, 50% new.
