Tasting Notes: Cassis, Tar, Balckberry, Black cherry
The estate was founded in 1881 by Cesare Pio, and is one of the oldest in the region and one of the first to export. It is still owned and run by his descendants - it is in the hands of the fifth generation: Federica Boffa, and her cousin Cesare Benevenuto. At Pio Cesare, there has always been a conviction that great wine can come only from the finest grapes and the winery's output has always been limited through adherence to the highest standards.
This is the wine to buy in commemoration of the 140th anniversary (1881-2021) of the historic house of Pio Cesare. A traditional style Barolo. It's balanced, full bodied, and elegant with excellent structure, soft but powerful tannins and medium acid. Very classic flavors of cassis, tar, oak, leather, plum, blackberry,, black cherry, blackcurrant, smoke and crushed rose with violet and lavender undertones. The finish is long and engaging. Approachable now but can age for a decade or more. Will do well with grilled beef ribs.
